What is a TENS labour machine?

A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) machine is a portable, drug-free pain relief device that can be used during labour. It works by transmitting electrical impulses through the skin to the nerves, which can help to block pain signals from reaching the brain. TENS machines are often used to provide relief from chronic pain but are also effective for labour pain relief.  (Daniel et al., 2021)

Daniel, L., Benson, J. and Hoover, S. (2021) “Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation for pain management for women in Labor,” MCN: The American Journal of Maternal/Child Nursing

Is a TENS machine good for labour pain relief

A TENS can help provide natural pain relief from the very beginning of labour with little to no side effects. (Daniel et al, 2021). You may still need other forms of pain relief as your labour get stronger. Natural pain relief has a number of advantages over medication. It helps the mother to remain alert and aware during labor, which can be beneficial for both the mother and child. Moreover, natural pain relief can help the mother to feel more in control during a time when she may otherwise feel helpless.

There are different theories on how TENS works to help women cope with labour pain, including,

  • the electrical pulses help prevent pain signals reaching the brain
  • the pulses stimulate natural endorphins
  • it helps women feel more in control and less anxious
  • it acts as a distraction from contractions

How to use a TENS machine for labour?

A TENS machine is often used during labour to help ease the pain of contractions. It works by sending electrical impulses to the nerve that helps to block pain signals from reaching the brain, thus, providing relief from pain and discomfort.

To use a TENS machine during labour, the pads are placed on the lower back. The machine is then turned on, and the intensity of the electrical impulses can be adjusted as needed. Starting from the lowest setting, the intensity of electrical pain-relieving pulses can be increased as contractions get stronger. It is important to keep the pads in place during contractions and to remove them between contractions.

When to start using a TENS machine in labour?

In fact, the most common usage of TENS machines is to relieve users of back pain during the early stages of pregnancy. The most effective occasion for a pregnant woman to use a TENS machine, however, is during contractions. (Harrison et al., 1986). Where do you put TENS pads for labour pain relief?

When using a TENS machine for labour pain relief, it is important to position the pads correctly. For maximum pain relief during labor, it is recommended that you place four TENS pads on your back, as follows:

  • Position the top two pads approximately 4cm either side of the spine and 4-5cm above the imaginary navel line (just below the bra line)
  • Position the bottom two pads approximately 4cm either side of the spine and 4-5cm below the imaginary navel line (over the sacral dimple area). (Alana J Blincoe, 2013).

Be sure to turn off the machine before placing the pads on your skin.

Benefits of Using a TENS Machine in Labour

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation provides numerous benefits, including the following.

  • safe for women and their baby
  • drug-free pain management
  • portable and non-invasive
  • gives women more control to manage their labour pain
  • easy to use
  • helps reduce anxiety
  • allows women to move during labour
  • can be used for as long as needed and can be taken off at any time
  • can be used without any help from an anaesthetist, doctor or midwife
  • can be used for a home birth

Can I use any TENS machine for labour?

There are a variety of TENS machines on the market, and each one has specific features and benefits. While any TENS machine can be used for labour, it's important to choose one that is specifically designed for this purpose.

Best TENS labour machines typically have lower intensity levels and more program options, making them ideal for managing pain during childbirth. They come with special attachments that can be placed on the lower back or abdomen, providing targeted relief.

Can you sleep with a TENS machine on during labour?

While a TENS machine can be an effective way to manage pain during labor, it is not recommended to use the device while sleeping. This is because TENS works by sending the electrical impulses through the skin, which can disrupt the natural sleep cycle (Winder, 2022).

Additionally, sleeping with a TENS machine on can make it difficult to move into position if necessary. For these reasons, it is best to use TENS during times when you are awake and able to monitor the device.

Product Questions

What is a TENS machine?

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is a safe, drug-free, and non-invasive way to manage pain that can be used as often or as little as needed. It is a portable, battery-operated device that delivers electrical impulses to the body through electrodes placed on the skin.

TENS works by blocking signals from going to the brain and can be used to manage a variety of different types of pain including arthritis, chronic headaches, menstrual cramps, and labour pain.

In addition to being an effective form of pain relief, TENS is also portable and easy to use, making it an ideal option for women who are planning a home birth.

How does TENS machine work?

TENS machines are a popular pain relief method that has been used for over 50 years. It works by using a handheld device to deliver low-voltage electrical currents to relieve pain in a specific area.

The electrical impulses are delivered through electrodes placed on the skin, which stimulate the nerve endings and block pain signals from reaching the brain. TENS machines come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but they all have three basic components: a power source, an electrode pad, and a lead wire. The power source provides the electrical current, while the electrode pad delivers the current to the skin. The lead wire connects the electrode pad to the power source.

Who cannot use TENS machine?

There are some people who should not use a TENS machine (see “Contra-indications”). These include people with epilepsy, as well as those who have a cardiac pacemaker or a heart rhythm problem. Additionally, TENS should not be used on broken skin, and it is important to avoid placing the electrode pads over areas where there is swelling or inflammation.

If you have any other medical conditions, it is important to speak to your doctor before using a TENS machine. This is because it can interact with other medical conditions and medications. TENS machines are generally safe for most people to use, but it is always best to consult with your doctor before using one.

What are the adverse side effects of TENS machine?

Although most people can use a TENS machine without any adverse side effects, there are some potential risks to be aware of. The pads that are used with the machine can sometimes cause skin irritation or redness, particularly in people who are allergic to them.

If you experience any discomfort, it is important to speak to your doctor and take a break from using the machine. It is also important to avoid placing the pads over any open wounds, as this could lead to infection. Overall, TENS is a safe and effective treatment for many people, but it is important to be aware of the potential risks before you begin using the machine.
