Move again with targeted sciatic nerve pain relief using our TENS machine
Do you suffer with shooting pain that makes it hard to get out of bed and go about your day? Frustrated by needing to rely on other people because you’re in too much pain to move? Neuropathic pain is usually chronic pain and severe and can be hard to treat. It is usually caused by damage, disease or injury to nerves in the body. Common types of neuropathic pain include peripheral neuropathy, diabetic neuropathy, post-herpetic neuralgia (a complication from shingles).
Sciatica is a type of neuropathic pain that causes shooting pain down the sciatic nerve, extending from the back down the legs. About 5 to 10% of people with low back pain have sciatica. Sciatica often goes away within a few months but sciatic pain relief is often needed. If not treated, sciatica can get even more painful due to permanent nerve damage and it can become even harder to move around. Some people even lose control of their bladder because the sciatica damaged their spinal cord.
A TENS machine can provide relief from sciatic pain and improve mobility while you recover.
Is a TENS Machine Good for Sciatic Nerve Pain?
Physiotherapists often use a TENS machine to help provide sciatic nerve pain relief. The TENS unit sends non-painful electrical pulses across the skin and along nerves to the brain to provide drug-free pain relief. The electrical stimulation helps the body to produce endorphins, a natural pain killer.
TENS is effective in relieving pain by acting on both the central and peripheral nervous system (Hashmi, Shaik, Kumar & Pillai, 2015). It floods the brain with endorphins, making sciatica patients feel less pain.

How to Relieve Sciatic Nerve Pain Using TENS Machine?
Using a TENS machine for sciatic treatment is as effortless as applying the electrodes to the correct body locations. People can turn on the machine and let it run for about 30 minutes. The treatment duration depends on the patient’s preferences. Sciatic nerve pain . It is wise to understand that TENS-related sciatic nerve pain relief only lasts about three to four hours.
In general, the device comes with adjustable settings, allowing patients to modify the pulse rate to ease the pain. It is not unusual for first-time users to feel strange because the TENS machine produces a tingling sensation. Generally, the following settings are recommended for optimal results:
- Pulse Rate: 2 to 10Hz for chronic Sciatic pain
- Pulse Rate: 80 to 120Hz for acute Sciatic pain
- Pulse Width: 175 - 200 us
